Long before Hernando De Soto visited Bainbridge in 1540, Seminole and Creek Indians called the areas along the Flint River home. On December 8, 1823, the Georgia Legislature created Decatur County, named after Stephen Decatur. In late 1824 Fort Hughes was named Bainbridge for Commodore William Bainbridge. The city was incorporated in 1829 and it is the County Seat for Decatur County. Today, the city covers approximately twenty-five square miles and is a progressive community of about 12,000. Bainbridge provides big city opportunities and smalltown hospitality, the best of both worlds for a quality of life that is unsurpassed.
